Everyone loves a birthday party especially if it’s your special day. So when the lovely people at Erstwilder approached me to work on their special 5th Birthday collection I couldn’t say no - also have you seen their amazing birthday collection?! It is simply FANTASTIC.
I have been collecting Erstwilder accessories since 2012 and I do admit my dressing drawer is filled up to its brim with these cute quirky accessories. I keep on telling myself I need to keep these accessories organised!
So after watching a video by Vanessa Diaz from Brite and Bubbly on Pingame Organisers (http://briteandbubbly.com/cute-diy-faux-cake-flair-aka-pingame-organizers-giveaway/) I couldn’t resist creating my own DIY Erstwilder faux cake, just for my Erstwilder brooches. It’s really easy to make and a great way to organise your brooches plus it is a lovely addition on your dresser and shelves.
SUPPLIES:
A few of these items can be purchased from Spotlight or your local hardware store:
- 2x3" thick Styrofoam circle discs or 3x3" Styrofoam circle discs
- Chalk paint
- Spray paint
- Pipping tips & pipping bag
- Gum paste roses
- Craft glue
STEPS:
Check out the amazing candy colours on Erstwilder’s new Birthday boxes– blue and pink. I’ve decided to create my own faux cake with the same colour tones.
You may choose any colour paint that you like, and remember to wear protective googles/mask whilst painting. Also another key thing to note, do not to purchase solvent based spray paint as it will dissolve the foam. (Yes, I’ve learnt this the hard way :P)
After spray painting the discs, leave it to dry overnight.
Now to style your cake. I would layer my painted discs on top of each other and prepare chalk paint for the finishing touches on the side. For my faux cake, I’ve used a white silicone sealant instead of the chalk paint- it works the same way as chalk paint.
Squeeze the sealant into a pipping bag and chose your tip for the cake decoration. Feel free to check out online YouTube videos for piping techniques, one of my recommended guide and video is by Craftsy (http://www.craftsy.com/blog/2013/03/piping-techniques/) or Wilton.
Wilton has a great website which is filled with very useful instructions and recommendations on how to make gum paste flowers. A lot of patience and time is required for this! It usually takes a few hours to work on a series of roses.

Gum Paste flowers add a lovely addition to the cake, however if you don’t have time a simple faux cherry for the top or chalk paint decoration would suffice. Run wild with your imagination.
Once the chalk paint and flowers are done, you may add your brooches to the cake. I would pin my brooches into the foam or stick it on with blu-tack. I’ve also displayed mine on a cake stand.
TA-DAH! How pretty is this? Now we are all set for a celebration... just need some sparkles and confetti to get the party going!
